Short breaks in Cotswolds cottages

Short breaks in Cotswolds cottages

The Cotswolds is one of England's favourite short break destinations, famous for the many honey-coloured limestone villages in beautiful countryside. It lies mainly within the counties of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, but extends into parts of Wiltshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Warwickshire. Thanks to the M4, M40 and M5 motorways that skirt its flanks this delightful region is quintessentially bucolic England it is very accessible.

Short breaks in Cotswolds cottages bring to mind scenes of rural tranquillity. Throughout this area of gently hilly country the stone features in buildings and walls act as a common thread, seamlessly blending the historic towns and villages with their surrounding landscape of rolling grasslands and beech woods.

The north Cotswolds includes well-known villages such as Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Campden, often described as the 'jewel in the crown' of the Cotswolds. It certainly is one of the best preserved and most historically important villages. The High Street curves in a gentle arc and is lined with a range of wonderful and intriguing shops. The famous Wool Market or Market Hall stands in the High Street. This little golden stone building, with its arched and timbered roof, epitomises the Cotswolds. Cotswold cottages conjure the image of picture-postcard villages, none more so than Bourton-on-the-Water, It straddles the river Windrush with its series of elegant low bridges beside neat tree-shaded greens and tidy stone banks.

Many settlements in the Cotswolds were important wool towns and the abundance of wealthy wool merchants left a legacy of impressive buildings. Stow-on-the-Wold is a delightful market town and, along with Moreton-in-Marsh, perhaps the best known of the small Cotswolds towns. Both stand on the old Roman road the Fosse Way running from Exeter to Lincoln. The vast Market Square testifies to the former importance of Stow-on-the-Wold, whilst the high street in Moreton-in-Marsh has many elegant 18th century inns and houses including the Redesdale Market Hall, a Victorian 'Tudor' building of some distinction.

Further south the area has a slightly wilder nature. Chipping Sodbury lies at the foot of the southern Cotswold escarpment in southern Gloucestershire 8 miles north-west of Bristol. It was once an important market centre in medieval times standing at the crossroads on the main route between Bristol, Oxford and London. The long market square, known as Broad Street, is bordered with a wonderful assortment of houses from every period, but largely 17th-century Cotswold stone buildings or Georgian of mellow brick. Most of these are now occupied by bright and cheerful shops which still retain a lively country atmosphere.

There are hundreds of towns or villages to see or stay in, from hamlets with no shops to charming market towns with restaurants and pubs.
